I was recently alerted to this excellent guide to disability inclusion at work. Created by Ben, “The definitive guide to disability inclusion in the workplace” provides in-depth insights on what accessibility means and gives concrete tips on how to create a work climate that is inclusive of people with a disability.
NIM Benchmark Analysis 2019-2021
On March 8, we presented the latest results from our benchmark analysis on the Netherlands Inclusiveness Monitor data. In this analysis, we investigated where Dutch organizations stand in the field of D&I policy, and mapped out the challenges and opportunities of an inclusive climate. Our findings and recommendations are summarized in a factsheet, that we discussed with the participating organizations during a fruitful meeting. This meeting was part of the project "It has to work: Inclusiveness in the labor market through synergy between science and practice" and was made possible by the Goldschmeding Foundation.
Funded research on the unseen and unheard
We are excited to announce that our project “The Power of One” has been granted the Unusual Collaborations (CUCo) grant for the second time in a row, this time for the period 2022 - 2023. Together with Daniel Lakens (TU/e), Marianne Boes (UMC Utrecht), Martine Veldhuizen (UU), Cristiana Santos Teixeira (UU), Özge Bilgili (UU), Mathias Funk (TU/e), and Merel van Goch (UU), we aim to understand why certain groups of people remain unseen and unheard in research and outreach efforts. As such, we hope to find ways to collect data on people currently not included in abstract categories, datasets, or algorithms and we will thus improve understanding of the mismatch between the studied sample and the underlying population, and formulate suggestions to make data collection efforts more inclusive.

Purple Friday Breakfast session
Today, on Purple Friday, we show our solidarity with LGBTI+ people by wearing the colour purple at school and university. To mark the occasion, Workplace Pride in collaboration with Elsevier and Stichting Student Pride Nederland hosted a breakfast webinar to whichI contributed, together with Dr. Michiel Kolman, the Workplace Pride Co-Chair, Vinod Subramaniam, President of the Executive Board of Twente University, and Ruben Hoving and Aditya Srivastava from Deloitte.
We discussed Purple Friday and it's importance as well as how it fits into a corporate or academic setting.
For those who slept in, you can watch the video of the session HERE
How to create an LGBTI+ friendly workplace?
How can employers contribute to creating an LGBTI+ friendly workplace? That was the question that Forum Magazine from employer organization VNO-NCW posed to Remco Boxelaar, Remke Verdegem, Jelle Weever, Marion Mulder, Stefan Twigt and me. See here for some concrete tips for inspiration.
D&I Measurement for Impact
It is of crucial importance that organizations determine the effectiveness of their diversity and inclusion policy. But how to go about it?
To help organizations on their way, we created a handout with concrete recommendations: 'Measuring for Impact'. In this handout, we summarize the scientific insights and provide concrete guidelines for how organizations can measure the effectiveness of their D&I initiatives (preview video).

Op-ed in Dutch Daily with our perspective on coming out at work
Despite the net positive effect of being open about one's sexual orientation, coming out at work is a complex and continuous process. In this op-ed in Dutch Daily Het Parool, Michiel Kolman and I argue for a more realistic perspective on Coming Out at work and emphasize the importance of an inclusive work climate. Organizations can and should do more to create work environments where everyone feels that they belong and can be themselves.
Bookpresentation "De Inclusiemarathon"
Last night, I was very happy to attend the presentation of the excellent book “De inclusiemarathon” by Kauthar Bouchallikht and Zoë Papaikonomou at the House of Watt. For this book, they interviewed 41 diversity professionals and researchers about their knowledge and experiences in the field of diversity and inclusion, including my PhD student Onur Sahin. “The Inclusion Marathon is a revealing book about the persistent lack of diversity and equality within many organizations, but also a constructive, concrete story about how organizations can become more diverse, more equal and more inclusive.”
